Veltassa (partiromer) added to hospital formulary
Veltassa (partiromer) has been added to the health system's formulary, replacing Kayexalate (SPS) for adult patients.
Here are some key things to know:
- Partiromer has a more favorable side effect and safety profile than sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS)
- Patiromer comes in 8.4g powder packets for oral suspension and is dosed daily for chronic use
- This medication does not replace emergent hyperkalemia regimens and should be used adjunctively just like SPS; the recommended dose in this setting is 8.4g
- Partiromer should not be given rectally
- Pediatric patients should continue to use SPS
